News \ U.S. Congress Bill Wants 'Cigarette-Like' Warnings on Game Boxes

Being labelled as "The Video Game Health Labelling Act of 2009", a Californian Congressman wants all games rated Teen (13+) and higher to have "Cigarette-Like" warnings on the front of the box.

The congressman, who has been known for targeting video games in the past said the following:

The video game industry has a responsibility to parents, families, and to consumers – to inform them of the potentially damaging content that is often found in their products. They have repeatedly failed to live up to this responsibility. Meanwhile research continues to show a proven link between playing violent games and increased aggression in young people. American families deserve to know the truth about these potentially dangerous products.

We must hold the video game industry accountable and do everything in our power to ensure parents are aware of the detrimental effects that violent games can have before making decisions on which games are appropriate for their children to play. I am proud to introduce the Video Game Health Labelling Act of 2009, and am hopeful my legislation can work to stop the growing influence of violent media on America’s children and youth.

If the plan goes forward, warnings like in the picture above will be placed on the front of the box for both packaged and digitally distributed copies, but the main problem would be that if the plan is deemed somewhat successful, will it be implemented in Australia as well?

The main point of video games is to distribute simulations of violence to people...?

Yay for out of touch politicians too stupid to move with the times.

Maybe, instead of warnings on video games *rolls eyes*, we should start putting idiot warnings on these guys so people will know not to listen to anything they say?
Of course smart people (aka most of us here) already know not to listen to them anyway. It's the not-so-smart people who could benefit from these warnings.
But then again I much prefer putting a bulls eye target on the foreheads of these politicians and other idiots just like them than an idiot warning sticker.

If it actually went forward, then it would only be in the US, so no need to worry. Unless of course, we follow suit. But it will most likely fail anyway.

Seeing as I buy my own games, this wouldn't change anything for my anyway...the parents don't see the boxes often.

I think they should do it. The only people it will affect will be those parents that have no idea what their kids are playing/doing and they might actually wake up to their ignorant parenting.

Secondly, they should use cigarrette-like images. Kids with red eyes, broken thumbs, and all the other potential injuries you may get whilst condemning yourself to video gaming.

You speak words of wisdom. The news is a lot more influential than any video game. For one, it's actually real. Two, it's graphic. Three, it's open for ANY viewer!

violence has been around alot longer than video games, so find another scapegoat

the internet filtering idea was shot down before christmas, none of the ISP's would take it on, and only Optus is going to do limited trials

I could swear I've read something about them wanting to do this a while ago, but thankfully the idea was canned.
