Has GTA peaked? One could argue that Take Two's most profitable series doesn't carry the same stigma that it once did, but does that mean everything is down hill from here?
If you're not a fan of rhetorical questions it's best to leave now, as we will not have answers for years to come. Broadpoint AmTech analyst, Ben Schachter, believes that the flagship title of controversy may have already peaked. He cites less than impressive sales of late as the main indicator as to what we can expect from Grand Theft Auto in the future. The critically acclaimed DS/PSP GTA: Chinatown Wars sold no where near as well as it deserved, and the 360 exclusive DLC packs, Episodes from Liberty City, hasn't faired as well as Rockstar would have hoped. To be fair the latter is two pieces of DLC, so we can't expect it to sell as well as a full release title. However, combined Episodes of Liberty City offers 40 hours of gameplay for a very reasonable price.
"Has the Grand Theft Auto franchise peaked? Given the strength of GTA IV in 2008, the question may seem misplaced, but our concern is that the very highly rated new GTA content for Xbox as well as PSP and DS did not perform up to expectations in 2009," Scahchter says. "Now, we very clearly understand that these do not represent 'true' new GTA titles. However, the fact is that these were compelling titles, attractively priced, and reasonably well-promoted, yet they fell relatively flat."
Will GTA reclaim its PS2 glory? Or has it already reached its peak?
