E3 2009: PSP GO officially confirmed

During their E3 2009 keynote speech, Sony confirmed the PSP GO. They also confirmed that the new iteration of the handheld wouldn't make the PSP-3000 or UMD obsolete and that they intended to continue to support both in the future, even after the PSP GO is released.

Kaz Hirai introduced the PSP GO to the crowd, stating that it is 50% smaller and 40% lighter than the original PSP. It has 16gb of internal memory, and is set for release on October 1, 2009 in the US and Europe for $249 US.

Yet another reason the PSP Go! needs more BUILT-IN storage, particularly as it will compete DIRECTLY with the iPhone range in the "portable multimedia device" category, and indirectly in the "gaming" category (as was mentioned above).

For a start, the button placement looks like it'd take some getting used to and just 16GB built-in?

I can buy a 300GB+ HDD (hard disk drive) for about $AU150, so I find it hard to believe that they couldn't have bumped it up a little without affecting the price too much... At least 30GB would've been nice.

Remember PSP GO is just an option for digital distribution. PSP 1000 - 3000 will still be supported with firmware updates and UMDs. I'm all for digital distribution and find that I download more games from the PS Store for my PSP than I buy on disc so its perfect.
