News \ E3 2009: Final Fantasy VII on PS Store

During their E3 2009 keynote speech, Sony announced that Final Fantasy VII is now available for download on the Playstation Store. No word on whether it is available outside the US just yet.

Sony also confirmed that 50+ Playstation 1 classics will be hitting the PS Store in 2009.

FF VII has been heavily demanded as an available game on the store, with some fans even still anticipating (and hoping) for a remake of the highly critically successful title. Hopefully the title is also available for download outside of the US.

This is not the quote to which I was referring, but here's another one from Square Enix stating that a Final Fantasy VII remake is not as unrealistic as it might seem (the quote to which I was referring however, was a little more concrete than this and featured in an official interview, by GameSpot if I remember correctly):

Thank you for contacting SQUARE ENIX Customer Support,

We hope this letter answers your questions.

Our parent company, SQUARE ENIX of Japan, has no current plans to create a sequel or remake to that particular title at this time. This is not to say that it will never happen, it’s just that their development teams are currently focusing on numerous other projects.

We hope this information has been of assistance.

Thanks,
Neil- SQUARE ENIX Customer Support

The source is a guy that sent a petition to Square Enix, requesting a Final Fantasy VII remake...

The petition is still going, if anyone's interested in signing it (he sends another letter to Square Enix every 10,000 signatures or something like that):

jimmiq,

Originally it was thought that Square Enix would never touch such a "classic", though they did recently hint at doing just that, pointing out that there were "other projects" that "took priority at the moment" and directly stating that a "Final Fantasy VII remake might be possible at some point in the future".

I can't remember where I read it (I think it was somewhere on GameSpot Australia), but it came straight from their mouth, so you never know what might happen down the track...

Personally, I think if they were going to do that though, they'd need to stay true to the original (ie. only update the graphics & sound) and/or include/make available a copy of the original version as well, for those who don't want/don't like the "new" version or just want to feel nostalgic (this is particularly true if they were going to change the remake in some dramatic way however).

eep, eh ah
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!
For those who have played FFVII, that is the opening cutscene, but in modern PS2/P quality rendering. If they do release it HD-ified I hope they re-release the original, ported for a 6th/7th gen console
