Guides \ Unbrick Or Downgrade ANY PSP Using Pandora Battery

Unbrick or Downgrade any PSP using Pandora's Battery

Requirements

Software Requirements:

_ Pandora's Battery Files
_ 1.50 Sony Update
_ WinRAR or 7-Zip

Hardware Requirements:

Two separate PSP's: * A PSP you want reflashed * A non-bricked PSP to prepare the files on. This PSP must also be capable of running 1.50 homebrew.

In theory, this could be done with one PSP. However, this PSP would need to be non-bricked, and capable of running homebrew. It would be much more efficient to use a homebrew flasher in that case. Therefore, the Pandora Battery should only be used to downgrade PSP's or un-brick PSP's.
A spare battery, of any make. After this process is complete, the PSP will not boot into its normal state with this battery
A spare Memory Stick Pro Duo, at least 256MB, less than 4GB. The Memory Stick Duo will not work, it must be a Memory Stick Pro Duo.

Warning!

The following steps require flashing. Do so at your own risk. No-one will be held responsible but yourself if something stuffs up.

Preparations

Memory Stick Preparations
Using a USB cable, connect your PSP to your PC.
Backup all data on the Memory Stick.
Using any utility, format the Memory Stick.
Using WinRAR, open up the pandora.zip file you downloaded (if you haven't already, it's in the Requirements section)
Unzip the files to a folder on your PC.
Open a command prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd)
In the command prompt, switch into the 'mspformat' folder you extracted in step 1... wherever you put it.
Type "mspformat X" where X is the drive of your PSP. Do not include the colon. For example, my PSP is connected at O:, so I type "mspformat O".
You should see a prompt like this:

>>> C:\psp\pandora\mspformat> mspformat.exe O
>>> You are about to format the drive O.
>>> All data will be lost. Do you want to continue? [Y]
Type 'y'.
>>> y
and you should see
>>> Drive succesfully formatted, and partition moved.

>>> C:\psp\pandora\mspformat> mspformat.exe O
>>> You are about to format the drive O.
>>> All data will be lost. Do you want to continue? [Y]
Type 'y'.
>>> y
and you should see
>>> Drive succesfully formatted, and partition moved.

Disable the USB connection and remove the Memory Stick
Put the Memory Stick back into your PSP, and re-enable the USB connection.
Create a folder called PSP in the root of your memory stick (X:\PSP, where X is your PSP's drive letter)
Create a GAME folder (for 1.50) or GAME150 folder (for custom firmware) inside the PSP folder on your memory stick (X:\PSP\GAME) or (X:\PSP\GAME150)
From the pandora.zip file, copy the contents of the battery folder and the installer folder to the GAME directory you just created (X:\PSP\GAME) or (X:\PSP\GAME150)
Rename the 1.50 Sony Update you downloaded to UPDATE.PBP
Copy the UPDATE.PBP file to the root of your memory stick (X:\UPDATE.PBP)
Disable the USB connection and remove the Memory Stick
Put the Memory Stick back into the PSP
Run installer on the PSP. This will create the file needed to reflash your PSP (There should now be a file named "msipl.bin" at the root of the Memory Stick).
Connect the PSP to your PC via a USB cable.
Copy "msipl.bin" into the folder called "msinst" that was extracted from the ZIP file.
In the Command Prompt, switch into the "msinst" folder... wherever you put it.
Type "msinst X msipl.bin" where X is the drive of your PSP. Do not include the colon.
For example, my PSP is connected at O:, so I type "msinst O msipl.bin".

You should see a prompt like this. I guarantee that your stuff will be slightly different; it depends on how your computer is set up, what sort of memory stick you have, and so on. As long as you get the "Are You Sure? [Y]" prompt, you know that the msipl.bin file is OK.
>>> C:\psp\pandora\msinst>msi nst O msipl.bin
>>> PSP MS IPL Installer
>>> Load IPL code msipl.bin
>>> 241664 bytes(59 block) readed
>>>
>>> Target DRIVE is 7
>>> Check partation Sector
>>> boot status 0x80
>>> start head 0x05
>>> start sec/cyl 0x0004
>>> partation type 0x06
>>> last head 0x0F
>>> last sec/cyl 0xB7E0
>>> abs sector 0x00000810
>>> ttl sector 0x000767F0
>>> signature 0xAA55
>>> Check BPB Sector
>>> signature AA55
>>> Check free reserved sector:OK
>>> Write ABS Sector 0x10 to 0x1E7
>>> Are You Sure ?[Y]
Type 'y'.
>>> y
and you should see
>>> Write MS BOOT CODE
That means that you now have a "magic" memory stick. You should see a prompt like this. I guarantee that your stuff will be slightly different; it depends on how your computer is set up, what sort of memory stick you have, and so on. As long as you get the "Are You Sure? [Y]" prompt, you know that the msipl.bin file is OK. Disable the USB connection and remove the Memory Stick

Battery Preparation

1. Make sure you have completed the "Memory Stick Preparation" first.
2. Plug the Memory Stick back in.
3. ***OPTIONAL *** Run the "Pandora's Battery Creator" program on the PSP and press Triangle "/\" to back up the contents of your battery's flash into a file on you memory stick. The program will automatically exit. *Note:* This step is REQUIRED if you want to make this a normal battery again; otherwise it's optional.
Run the "Pandora's Battery Creator" program on the PSP. This prepares the battery. You will not be able to use it normally from now on unless you've taken the optional step above to revert after the fact (should be using a spare so you can keep it around anyways).
You now have a "Magic Memory Stick" and a "JigKick Battery". Proceed to the next section to reflash your PSP.

Reflash your PSP

1. Remove the UMD, Battery, Memory Stick, and Power Cable from the bricked PSP. Insert the Memory Stick ("Magic Memory Stick") you prepared beforehand into the bricked PSP.
2. Insert the battery ("JigKick Battery") you prepared beforehand into the PSP. Boot the PSP. A menu will appear. Follow the onscreen instructions to reflash your PSP.
3. When the flashing process is complete, restart your PSP.
4. If all goes well, a blue screen will appear, telling you that your settings are corrupt, and to press circle to repair them. Do so now, rebooting your PSP if necessary. You should now have a 1.50 PSP.

Excert From ReadMe

* The firmware in the Memory Stick is not a full 1.50, but a minimal subset. Therefore, not all applications (such as flashers, or recovery apps) will load.
* Only Memory Stick Pro Duo are compatible. Memory Stick Duo (e.g. 32MB sticks) are not supported.
* The IDStorage cannot be totally restored, as there is no known way to regenerate it properly.
* It is strongly RECOMMENDED to make a flash dump of the PSP before any downgrading operation.
* There might be a BSOD at the end of the downgrade. This is normal, and happens on the standard downgraders.
* All hardware revisions known at this day are supported.
* This release contains no Sony-copyrighted material. All required Sony data is generated from the v1.50 update files.

I think all solutions here to downgrade the early versions of fw

I do all way's here and at other sites to get my PSP back to the old firmware but no way.

Finally sony team defeat the hackers by this firmware 3.73

So if you don't reach to this version, my advice to you is to forget the upgrade now to v3.73 untill the downgraders released (maybe in near future we can see some real hackers making real downgraders).

The ultimate Pandora box installer (THE MOST SIMPLIEST ONE OUT THERE)
I’m a complete knob with the PSP, I was introduced this from a friend and I highly recommended it to everyone, this is the most simplest Pandora Battery installer you will find anywhere, it solves all my problems from not knowing anything about the psp to making into a cfw homebrew enabled psp. I can promise you that this will save you a lot of time, especially if your knob. This will work for Fat PSP and slim. Unbricking/Downgrading

hey skua sent me a way better tutorial than this

REQUIREMENTS :
1) A spare PSP battery (not recommended(you can convert it bak to normal)) , any make will do .

2) A spare memory stick PRO DUO (it has to be PRO DUO)

3) A PSP with Custom firmware ( OE or M33) or a 1.5 PSP. Ask you friends , search for one

INSTALLATION :
1) Take out the 1.5 or Custom firmware PSP ( OE or M33) and put in the spare memorystick (it has to be pro duo) and spare battery that you wanna modify .

2)Now you gotta format the memory stick . Scroll to SETTINGS > SYSTEM SETTINGS > FORMAT MEMORY STICK

3) OK now download this pack from here . and EXTRACT it with WinRAR . Don't have Winrar Download it from here

4) Now extract the PANDORA folder from the downloaded pack to the desktop . Inside the Pandora folder you will find two other folders "msinst" and "mspformat"

5) Connect you PSP to the PC via USB cable .

6) Now in you computer go to START > RUN and type in CMD and click on OK . A black box will popout .

7) Here's kinda the confusing part . your computer might show C:\ or C:\Documents and Setting\Username> … Now I told you to you to extract the folders to the Desktop . So copy the location of the msformat picture here paste it followed by the drive letter of your PSP (eg my psp drive removable disk (I:) the letter is I )

Now if your PC shows C:/ in your CMD copy the address bar and paste it in followed by the letter of your psp drive .

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop\PANDORA\mspformat\mspformat.exe I

IF you PC shows C:\Documents and Setting\Username> copy the address bar and paste it in followed by the letter of your psp drive

C:\Documents and Setting\Username>Desktop\PANDORA\mspformat\mspformat.exe I

Keep trying till you get this prompt (like mine) :

>>> C:\Documents and Setting\Username>Desktop\PANDORA\mspformat\mspformat.exe I
>>> You are about to format the drive I .
>>> All Data will be lost . Do you want to continue? [Y]
Then you type in y and you will see
>>> Drive successfully formatted, and partition moved.
After that you can close the CMD box

9) Disconnect your psp from the PC and remove the memory card and turn of the PSP , then place the MS (MS=memory stick) back in and turn the PSP on . Then reconnect you PSP to the Pc . NOTE: You have to do this …

10) Now download this pack from here , extract it with WinRar and copy the PSP folder and the UPDATE.PBP to the ROOT of the PSP memory stick . If you you have a 1.5 PSP no problem , If you have Custom Firmware make sure you turn on the 1.5 kernel mode ( to know how see here)

11) Disconnect your PSP . Scroll to GAME and click on "Pandora's Battery Firm. Installer" it will take a few moments . After its done remove the MS from the PSP turn it off then place it back in and turn the PSP back on again, you HAVE to do this .

12) Connect your PSP to the PC . A Few files and folders will be formed in your ROOT , now copy the msipl.bin from the root to the "msinst Folder" which is inside your extracted Pandora folder . It should look like this

13) Here we go again START >RUN type in CMD . That black box will open again . Now copy the address of the msinst.exe followed by the PSP drive letter followed by the address of the msipl.bin

Now if your PC shows C:/ in your CMD it should be something like this (with reference to PSP's drive as I)

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop\PANDORA\msinst\msinst.exe I Documents and Settings\username\Desktop\PANDORA

first of all i would like to say i may be wrong about this:
for the pandora memory stick to be created you need to do something to the memory stick with a file (uses the psp's IPL) that is generated via the application you run. using the files with some one elses IPL will result in a brick
You will need a HEN PSP to make the battery and for generating the memorystick because it contains some files from the 1.50 update custom firmware is again needed, but not essential. Try using Google a bit and someone might have already put the files together for download.

basicly he can make a pandoras battery and magic memory stick on his custom firmware. then put them in your psp and downgrade it.

*EDIT*
hey repop, you may want to add something about how to do this with the new Slim&Lite. it doesnt unbrick but does put 3.60 M33 on it. it uses the same pandoras battery but you just run a extra program on the mem stick

so, for those of you who dont know, you can turn your pandoras battery into a PSP SLIM&LITE homebrew putt-er-on-erer

lol i love that word

soz man, you need to be on official version 1.5 or on custom firmware (you can only update to this if you are on v1.5). this is because sony have put security patches on their firmware to stop you doing this.

The only way you can downgrade (v3.52) currently is if you have a friend with custom firmware or with a already made pandoras battery

Good Guide, Now i can see what happens when i eventually get to downgrade

seeing as the likelyhood of this happening is low, damn no-one having a HENPSP

yes, yes you will. but you can't use a high memory stick to acutally do the downgrading, as firmware 1.5 won't support it.

@ BJ2, It dont matter if its minimal subset. This just means it wont have the battery edits, themes it had before it bricked.

@ Yekolf, If you actually took the time to read the title, This also downgrades the PSP. So that is a risk.

its funny that you say "Warning!
The following steps require flashing. Do so at your own risk. No-one will be held responsible but yourself if something stuffs up. " because this thing is supposed to UNBRICK your psp.

great guide repop. i had trouble using 'cmd' thing so i just moved the file onto a USB drive i had then put it :
F:\mspformat . it still worked.

one question i still have, is that with the "minimal subset" of v1.5, if you upgrade to CFW, will it still be a "minimal Subset" of the CFW?
